I am a licensed clinical psychologist in Washington DC where I worked for over twenty years as a staff psychologist at the Kingsbury Center. I am currently in private practice with the Kingsbury Wellness and Learning Group where I provide neuropsychological evaluations and individual psychotherapy for children and adults. I specialize in the assessment of gifted individuals with learning challenges.
My extensive experience working directly in the special education classroom and participating in all aspects of the special education process sets me apart from many diagnosticians. My evaluations provide comprehensive neuropsychological assessment as well as intensive assessment of reading and math skills.
I also have extensive experience in differentiating true social and emotional concerns from emotional reactions that are driven by a poor academic fit or undiagnosed learning challenges. I follow the dictum that "kids do well, if they can" and believe that challenging behaviors often result from a skill deficit that can be improved with targeted intervention and greater understanding.
I have worked with many gifted individuals who struggled with underachievement and learning challenges. Often called "twice-exceptional" or 2e, these students are perplexing to their parents and teachers, and they encounter considerable frustration in academic settings. I enjoy pursuing the mystery of why people who seem so capable struggle with basic tasks clearly within their cognitive capacity.
Often a good evaluation can identify underlying information processing challenges that prevent good students from knowing what to do and accessing their often extensive knowledge base on demand. My evaluations will help students and their loved ones better understand their challenges and also provide a road map for success through targeted accommodations and interventions. Focusing on personal strengths is an important component of a good plan.
If you or your child struggle to succeed despite hard work and strong motivation, there may be a hidden learning challenge that impedes progress and success. I would be happy to talk with you about your concerns and whether a diagnostic evaluation makes sense at this time. Please contact me for a free consultation.
